New York State Library Highlights the Vital Role of Public Libraries in Empowering Communities During National Library Week

The New York State Library is the Largest State Library in the Nation

National Library Week is Celebrated April 6-12

Libraries have the power to unlock imagination through reading, spark lifelong learning, and bring people together. This National Library Week, the emphasizes the critical role libraries play in strengthening local communities. As the largest state library in the nation, the New York State Library oversees more than 7,000 libraries and 72 library systems across the state, offering access to over 20 million items and a wide range of essential resources and services.

First celebrated in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association to celebrate the role of libraries, librarians, and library workers.

This year, National Library Week is recognized amidst a federal Executive Order calling for the elimination of the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The New York State Library relies on $8.1 million in IMLS funding to support its libraries and ensure millions of New Yorkers have access to vital programs, services, and expertise.

The New York State Library includes several key divisions that serve vital functions across the state:

  • : Supports modern library services, promotes family literacy, and administers over $100 million in state and federal funding.
  • : Collects, preserves, and provides access to materials that support New York State government work, available to researchers on-site, online, and through interlibrary loans.
  • : Offers free services for New Yorkers unable to read standard print, including braille books, digital talking books, and specialized players.

New York State Librarian Lauren Moore said, “Amid the threat of federal funding cuts, it's more important than ever to recognize the fundamental role libraries play. Libraries are not only hubs for learning and creativity, but they also offer critical services such as free Wi-Fi, digital collections, and impactful community programs. We are deeply proud of and committed to our ongoing work to serve the people of New York, assist local libraries, and protect invaluable government publications. As we navigate the potential impacts of funding cuts, I invite you to take the time this week to explore your local library and all it has to offer."

Interim Deputy Commissioner for Cultural °µÍøTV Michael Mastroianni said, "The New York State Library is a crown jewel of the °µÍøTV, the State of New York, and our nation.
